Before the advent of the Oakland Landscape Committee (OLC),
the median strip at the junction of Hiller Road, Tunnel Road, and Highway 13
was filled with debris – oil cans, litter, garbage.
But then the Oakland Landscape Committee was formed by
residents of Hiller Highlands.
They used “elbow grease” and picked up the litter, garbage,
and cans and transformed the median strip into Fireside Gardens.
They also partnered with Oakland’s Adopt-a-Spot program and
branched out to create the Gateway Memorial and more.
To quote the website of OLC:
“Firestorm
Memorial Garden
Created in 1993 and dedicated in 1994, the garden honors the Oakland hills residents who lost their homes and their lives in the 1991 Oakland Hills Firestorm. A bronze sculpture at the southern end is surrounded by low walls bearing plaques with the names of the 25 people who died in the firestorm. A drinking fountain honors Oakland Fire Department Battalion Chief James Riley, who died trying to save lives. It is an official stopping point on Oakland’s Scenic Route.”
Tenants of Caldecott Lane, in partnership with Oakland’s Adopt-a-Spot program, can also work together to create positive
change.
We can clean up the
debris on public property behind our buildings. . .
We can plant indigenous
plants to line the creeks cleaned of vegetation.
We can restore our
environment to its natural beauty.
Together we can create
positive change for our community.
We look forward to partnering with you and all
residents on Caldecott Lane on Earth Day, April 20, 2013.
